Welcome, Dr. Vishisht Mehta
To help address the increasing need for pulmonology care in Southern Nevada, Comprehensive Cancer has added a specialized pulmonologist, Vishisht Mehta, MD, to its team of doctors caring for patients. Dr. Mehta will be part of the Lung Center of Nevada team, a division of Comprehensive Cancer Centers, where he will treat patients with acute and chronic pulmonary health concerns.
Specializing in Interventional Pulmonology allows Dr. Mehta to focus on advanced, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of thoracic diseases. His expertise includes minimally invasive treatment for patients with benign and malignant airway obstructions, subglottic stenosis, malignant pleural effusions, advanced COPD/ emphysema and bronchopleural fistulas among other conditions.
He has authored and reviewed various published scholarly articles. At international conferences, Dr. Mehta has been a presenter and moderator for original research sessions. He received awards and grants for his research endeavors and he also co-founded the Lung India Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving lung health in Mumbai, India.
Dr. Mehta has specialized training in endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy, robotic bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, airway/bronchial stenting (metallic and silicone), endoscopic ablation (laser ablation, cryoablation, thermal ablation), bronchial thermoplasty, use of endobronchial valves (for prolonged air leaks and also for bronchoscopic lung volume reduction for COPD) and indwelling tunneled pleural catheter placement. By using endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques instead of conventional surgery, interventional pulmonology offers faster diagnosis, quicker recovery time and less pain for patients.
Dr. Mehta believes the two most important aspects of the patient-physician relationship are the patient’s goals of care and shared decision-making. In the same context, sharing the opportunity for the patient to make their informed decision is another cornerstone of this relationship.
The addition of Dr. Mehta to the Lung Center’s team is of critical importance, given lung cancer is the leading cause of all cancer deaths in the United States, and Nevada is no exception to those statistics. Additionally, as one of the last places in the country where people are allowed to smoke inside workplaces, providing care for those affected by second-hand smoke is a critical necessity.
The physicians at Lung Center of Nevada, and now including Dr. Mehta, provide evaluation, diagnosis and referrals for treatment options to patients with lung and bronchus cancer as well as treatment for various pulmonary diseases including asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, chronic cough and nicotine dependence.
Comprehensive offers low-dose CT lung cancer screenings for patients of two high-risk groups; patients that are 50 years and older who have smoked for 20 or more pack years. A pack year is defined as 20 cigarettes smoked every day for one year. T. Patients with select risk factors include those who have been exposed to radon, have worked in a chemical-heavy environment or have a family history of lung cancer or a related disease, such as COPD or pulmonary fibrosis.
Dr. Mehta’s work will also include providing referrals for patients with lung cancer. Lung cancer is just what the name suggests – a cancer that has started in a person’s lungs. Even if it spreads to other parts of the body, it is still called lung cancer, because that is where it began. The number one cause is tobacco use, with smokers having 15-30 times more risk of developing lung cancer than nonsmokers. In fact, 80 to 90 percent of all lung cancer cases in the United States are smoking related.
With a wide range of respiratory issues affecting the people of the Las Vegas valley, Dr. Mehta is excited to get to work improving and saving lives.
