Ways To Stay Healthy During COVID-19
One of the biggest challenges during COVID-19 is staying healthy, while under stress. Stress is a natural facilitator of bad habits, including losing control of your diet, drinking too much alcohol and smoking. It’s also easier to sit on the couch and pass the time with distractions like TV shows, rather than get mentally and physically active.
The team at Comprehensive Cancer Centers knows that this is understandable, given the times, but we also want to remind everyone that it’s also important make time for activities that are healthy and self-care. At Comprehensive we offer the following recommendations:
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
A lack of sleep has been associated with weakened immunity, which is even more dangerous during COVID-19. Sleep offers the body a chance to regenerate, while it also offers the mind a chance to process all of the information that comes in the average day. A good way to get good sleep is to turn off the electronics before bed. Read a good book. Listen to some music. Let your mind wind down.
If you’re finding it challenging to get good sleep, you may want to consult one of the specialists at the Sleep Center at Comprehensive for a consultation. Sleep Center at Comprehensive is a full-service sleep disorders center in Nevada with seven Board Certified Sleep Medicine physicians on staff as well as a highly trained team of technicians to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with sleep disorders. The practice provides compassionate care, focusing on the needs and concerns of the patient to provide the highest quality of service. We are the only sleep center in Nevada to continually adjust patient’s CPAP machines to ensure their treatment remains comfortable and effective.
Get Outside
The need for social distancing has been well established, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend 24 hours a day inside your home. Even if it’s sitting on a patio at an apartment or in a front or backyard of your home, being outside the four walls of the home is good for the body and mind. While Las Vegas is enjoying its final days under 100 degrees, this can be done all day. Take advantage of the warm weather while you can.
Get Further Outside
In addition to getting just outside the home, make sure to take walks, while being mindful to avoid other people. Take walks around the neighborhood and surrounding areas. As the weather warms, make sure to start earlier, or later in the day, and always bring water to stay hydrated.
Eat Well
There is no substitute for healthy meals — make sure you are eating lots of vegetables and fruits – while making the best of eating at home more often. The Comprehensive blog has recipes specifically for those with cancer, as well as those looking to reduce health risks. Pick one a week and treat yourself. If you’re looking for healthy eating options, Comprehensive Cancer has a list of recipes we recommend to patients.
Manage Your Anxiety
It is most likely that this virus has been and will be circulating in the Las Vegas community for some time, and it’s good to understand that reality. By employing frequent hand hygiene, environmental disinfection, social distancing (including family members if they are ill) and avoiding unnecessary travel and crowded places, you can take some control and minimize the chances of contracting COVID-19.
