Battling cancer requires both physical and emotional strength. In addition to the physical effects of cancer, patients often struggle with the emotional effects of losing their hair to chemotherapy treatment, so one salon in Long Island is stepping up to give cancer patients the gift of confidence.

Once a month, beauty salon owners and sisters Cynthia Sansone and Rachel DeMolfetto, open their doors to cancer patients and provide beauty treatments – free of charge. The two sisters were inspired to provide this service after their mother lost her battle with breast cancer in the 80’s. Offering this special service provides a way for them to honor their mother while empowering other cancer patients to continue to fight.

The pair created a space where women fighting cancer can find comfort and support from others around them. Sometimes people with cancer need more than just sympathetic gestures; they need to be around others who know exactly what they are going through. That is what the spa provides one day each month.

Some of the salon’s patrons have developed a long relationship with its employees. One woman, in particular, has been battling cancer for nearly 20 years, and has been coming into the salon every week for the past few years.

The salon offers various spa treatments, including full makeovers, to give their clients new and lasting confidence that makes their battle with cancer just a little bit easier.

Sansone and DeMolfetto’s salon was featured in an Oscar-nominated HBO special, Mondays at Racine. The film follows the stories of the salon’s patrons and what the free salon services mean to them during their battle with cancer.
