Roman Main Event Recap 2021

Comprehensive Cancer Centers’ proudly supports the Roman Main Event Coaches vs. Cancer basketball tournaments held in Las Vegas each year.

This year’s tournament featured Michigan heading west to battle hometown UNLV in the first round of the Roman Main Event on Friday, Nov. 19 at T-Mobile Arena.  The game was preceded by another marquee matchup in Arizona vs. Wichita State held earlier that evening. The championship and consolation were played on Sunday.

Since launching in 2014, the Roman Main Event has blossomed into one of the premier early season tournaments in college basketball. The event benefits Coaches vs. Cancer, an initiative spearheaded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society.

The Michigan Wolverines, ranked No. 5 in the country, had twice played UNLV in holiday tournaments in Las Vegas, and have fallen both times to the Runnin’ Rebels, first in 1976 and most recently in 1995. But for the 2021-22 season, Michigan was predicted to be the best team in the Big Ten Conference, thanks to a recruiting class rated No. 1 by 247Sports. UNLV is retooling this year, behind new Coach Kevin Kruger and a roster featuring six transfers, including four from the Big 12 Conference.

The Arizona Wildcats are local fan favorites, with many of the school’s alumni calling Southern Nevada home. While the team is currently rebuilding, they are a historic powerhouse that always plays a game entertaining for fans. The Wichita State Shockers are a mid-major success story, with many deep runs in the annual NCAA Tournament in March.

The high-profile games always bring out local alumni of the teams, as well as basketball fans looking forward to seeing games normally seen on television live in Las Vegas.  By bringing fans out to these games, Comprehensive educates them about the benefits of cancer prevention and detection, while sharing inspiring stories from cancer survivors.

As part of the Roman Main Event festivities, dozens of patients of Comprehensive Cancer Centers were given tickets to the game and invited onto the court during halftime for special recognition. Additionally, members of the community with connections to cancer sang the National Anthems, several physicians of Comprehensive were recognized on court for their amazing commitment to patient care, and breast cancer patient, Kristen Louis, presented the special championship belt, which was given to the winning team of the championship tournament.

In addition to showing support and appreciation for patients and their families, Comprehensive supports Coaches vs. Cancer to help audiences gain an understanding of how cancer is not a single disease, but actually many different disease types.  For more than 25 years, the Coaches vs. Cancer program, in collaboration with the National Association of Basketball Coaches, has united coaches and fans nationwide to help the American Cancer Society defeat a common enemy – cancer.

Through fundraising and education initiatives, the Coaches vs. Cancer program has supported the American Cancer Society in its efforts to save lives from cancer in Las Vegas, the United States and worldwide.

In addition to the Roman Main Event, Comprehensive Cancer Centers was proud to support the Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic earlier this spring. The event brought to Las Vegas the biggest names in college basketball coaching, and features the return of former UNLV head coach, Lon Kruger who had just announced his retirement. Kruger, who now makes his full-time home in Las Vegas, is even more dedicated to advancing the Coaches vs. Cancer cause, and its benefits, to the Las Vegas community.

Comprehensive Cancer Centers works closely with American Cancer Society on numerous other events that educate and empower Southern Nevadans. American Cancer Society also provides tips, tools, and online resources to help people set goals to improve health by quitting smoking, eating healthier foods, and maintaining an active lifestyle.  These resources are shared at local events, in schools and through other methods such sites at hospitals and treatment centers where the American Cancer Society Patient Navigator Program provides one-on-one guidance to people facing cancer through every step of their journey.
