American Cancer Society

In the 1970s, the American Cancer Society launched the first Great American Smokeout – a day aimed at educating the public about the dangers of smoking, and to encourage smokers to quit for the day. The campaign is held every third Thursday of November, and offers valuable resources to help prevent lung cancer by ending tobacco use. In honor of the Great American Smokeout locally, guests of BODIES The Exhibition are encouraged to drop a full or partial pack of cigarettes into the “commit to quit” box on the Atrium Level at Luxor Hotel & Casino from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. to receive a complimentary audio tour of the Exhibition. Visitors also have the chance to hold a real smoker’s lung and learn about the consequences that smoking can have on the body.

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network was founded in 1999, and offers support, research funding, and hope to pancreatic cancer patients and their loved ones. The organization hosts educational webinars and sells purple merchandise (the official color of pancreatic cancer awareness month) to get the word out. The organization also hosts an Annual Advocacy Day to encourage individuals to lobby for pancreatic cancer research.

Lung Cancer Alliance

The Lung Cancer Alliance is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to lung cancer patients and at-risk individuals. The organization hosts promotional fundraisers and events, like the Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil to raise funding for lung cancer research.

National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation

The National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation offers financial support to pancreatic cancer patients and their loved ones by hosting fundraisers and promoting pancreatic cancer awareness. In addition to providing financial support, the foundation also provides a network of survivors and advocates who can share their stories and inspire each other to continue to fight. During the month of November, the organization is promoting its Purple Hair for Passion campaign and asking people to purchase a clip-in 18 inch PURPLE extension to show your support. The extension costs $10 plus $1.95 for shipping and will go toward pancreatic cancer research.

The ongoing efforts of organizations like these helps raise the public awareness and support needed to find a future cure.
