Cancer can affect us on so many levels. In addition to the physical difficulties and treatment, the psychological and emotional impact of cancer can make it difficult to stay carefree and positive. In a unique and inspiring photography project called “If Only for a Second,” makeup artists and photographers worked to immortalize the carefree expressions of 20 cancer patients the moment they catch the first glimpse in a mirror of their newly made over reflection.

The project, organized by the Belgian nonprofit organization, Mimi Foundation, featured 20 cancer patients. The men and women were invited to receive free makeovers, but were asked to keep their eyes closed during the entire process. A team of professional makeup artists and hair stylists then created unique themes for each participant, and placed them in front of a one way mirror. A photographer sat on the other side of the mirror and captured the delight and surprise in their faces when they were finally allowed to open their eyes.

After the project, the foundation held an art gallery showing of the portraits, and produced a photo book of all 20 participants. All of the proceeds from book sales are donated to the Mimi Foundation.

This project captures more than just a look of surprise; it captures the brief moment when these 20 men and women can forget that they have cancer, “if only for a second.” The project itself was inspired by a cancer patient who remarked that the thing she missed most about her life before cancer was the ability to be carefree. This inspiring project shows us that it’s always possible to be positive and carefree, no matter what challenges we face.
