Comprehensive Cancer Centers partners to educate and inspire the community about cancer care and risk reduction.
Comprehensive Cancer Centers has long associated itself with local sports teams and events to connect with the community, share stories of patient successes, celebrate the practice’s physicians, and inform people about ways to reduce risks for cancers. At the end of 2022, Comprehensive was involved in local basketball and hockey games that raise awareness about cancer and hope for those with the disease.
Comprehensive’s involvement in these games is part of its goal to be a true community partner in any effort that promotes prevention and early detection. The practice understands that many families throughout Southern Nevada have been touched by a cancer diagnosis, including many people who attend the games. These partnerships help the practice reach more people with proactive messages that have a positive and lasting impact.
This year, the oncology practice is celebrating another year as sponsor of the Continental Tires Main Event featuring recent national champions in Baylor and University of Virginia, along with national powers UCLA and Illinois. The games are nationally televised, well-attended and held live at T-Mobile Arena. During the games, physicians are joined with patients of Comprehensive both on the court and video screens, where personal stories inspire the crowd in attendance.
Coaches vs. Cancer is an initiative founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches to help raise funds for American Cancer Society. A major driving force of the effort comes with a local connection through former UNLV Head Coach Lon Kruger. Kruger has brought numerous events to Las Vegas with the intention of helping those in the community in need of support during their cancer journeys.
Comprehensive is also a proud participant in Hockey Fights Cancer, a Golden Knights game where the team honors those fighting cancer, and celebrates the lives lost to the disease. As with the basketball games, Comprehensive shares patient stories, and messaging to help the crowd become better informed about cancer, and how to reduce risks for the disease.
The Knights wear Hockey Fights Cancer lavender jerseys during pregame warmups that will be autographed and auctioned. All proceeds from the jersey auction benefit organizations that help with early detection and/or financial assistance for cancer screenings.
Founded in 1998 by the National Hockey League® and the National Hockey League Players’ Association, Hockey Fights Cancer™ (HFC) unites the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families. The initiative gets an assist from players, coaches, officials, equipment managers, front office staff, corporate partners, and fans. Together, the hockey family looks to inspire hope and courage for those who are living with, going through, and moving past cancer.
Each of the 32 NHL clubs celebrate their own Hockey Fights Cancer Night. In addition to other HFC activations and messaging, these games will feature lavender dasher boards (lavender representing all cancers), and coaches and broadcasters will be wearing HFC ties. Hockey Fights Cancer will, once again, help the American Cancer Society and Canadian Cancer Society provide a better quality of life for patients, caregivers, and their families.
All year long, Comprehensive has teamed up with Golden Knights star, Shea Theodore, to present Kay’s Power Play. Kay’s Power Play funds screenings and diagnostics to individuals who reside in Nevada who are uninsured or underinsured. Additionally, all patients will be screened for The Nevada BCCP (Breast & Cervical Cancer Program) eligibility.
