Fitness Instructor Helps Cancer Patients Lift Weights and Spirits

By October 17, 2012No Comments

Fitness trainer Lockey Maisonneuve learned first hand that exercise is an essential part of cancer recovery after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006.  After completing her treatments, she discovered that returning to her fitness routine was difficult, and that certain exercises she once enjoyed were not recommended. After learning about her new exercise options, she decided to start a fitness community for fellow cancer survivors.

Lockey took classes to be a certified cancer exercise specialist.  Even as an experienced fitness trainer, she found her new cause to be more rewarding than she anticipated. Lockey discovered that through her new exercise classes, she was able to strengthen muscle and spirits.

Lockey believes that gaining physical strength is akin to gaining the mental strength to move on, so she named her exercise course MovingOn. According to Lockey, exercise helps increase energy levels, which is essential to reducing the fatigue associated with cancer treatments.

But the MovingOn program is more than just a fitness class. It’s a place of healing.  Class participants are all breast cancer survivors who can get to know each other during the classes.  They appreciate knowing someone who understands the struggles with breast cancer, and take time to share stories, offer support and form lasting friendships.

Lockey’s message is rapidly spreading throughout the country, and similar organizations are popping up across the United States.

In addition to leading the exercise classes, Lockey travels to present seminars about the importance of exercise during cancer treatments. She also notes that bringing survivors together in a program like MovingOn facilitates physical and mental healing in one place.
