Thank You Physicians of Comprehensive
National Doctor’s Day is held every year on March 30th in the United States. It is a day where Comprehensive Cancer Centers take some time to celebrate the contributions of its physicians who serve our community by taking caring our patients.
The first observance of Doctor’s Day occurred back on March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. When Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. That day back in 1933 included mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of doctors who had passed away to memorialize their life’s pursuit.
While initially an informal and localized effort, on March 30, 1958 a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. The day was fully formalized in 1990 when new legislation was introduced to establish a National Doctor’s Day. Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30th as “National Doctor’s Day.”
The significance of the date of March 30, was also that it was the first date of a doctor using ether anesthesia, when it was administered by Dr. Crawford W. Long. Today we continue to celebrate medical advances including those in fields such as oncology where doctors at Comprehensive Cancer Centers advance medicine through work in clinical research. The practice currently has more than 170 active research studies ongoing, helping bring new treatment option to Southern Nevada and beyond.
The team at Comprehensive Cancer Centers includes doctors providing medical care in oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, breast surgery, pulmonary medicine, sleep medicine and clinical research. The practice’s specialized physicians and staff use sophisticated diagnostic tools and the latest advances in cancer treatment, combining into a full range of innovative, exclusive services and research-based care in a supportive and caring environment.
How Can You Get Involved in Doctor’s Day Activities?
Like anyone else, doctors enjoy knowing that what they do for a living has a positive impact on the lives of those they’ve helped. If you know a Comprehensive doctor, or any other doctor who’s had this impact, send them a note of appreciation or an email to let them know how you feel.
Get a Regularly Schedule Checkup
While doctors will do anything they can, no matter the circumstance of care required, they appreciate seeing patients before a crisis occurs. This includes getting regularly scheduled, annual, checkups. This lets them know that you value their expertise, as well as empowers them to provide the best care possible to reduce risks and increase the likelihood of positive treatment outcomes.
Take Care of Yourself
Building on getting regular checkup and screenings, when you’re not in the doctor’s office, be sure to take care of yourself. This includes eating well, getting exercise, stop or don’t start smoking, and wearing sunscreen while outdoors. While doctors are eager to help when you’re not well, there are many simple choices we can make to stay healthier and should an illness occur, be better prepared to get through treatment successfully.
