Comprehensive Cancer Centers knows getting through a cancer journey is difficult and shares resources for those living life as survivors.

Getting through cancer is a significant achievement, and Comprehensive Cancer Centers  supports patients beyond their cancer journeys. We understand that the sense of accomplishment can quickly shift to wondering what comes next. While many people rally around you during treatment, what happens when they see you’re doing well and moving forward with life as survivors?

Moving forward starts with understanding that healing from the mental and physical challenges of treatment—and embracing a fresh start—is a journey, not a destination. It’s a process that takes courage, self-compassion, and openness to the unknown. It’s about recognizing the struggles, learning from the past, and finding the strength to turn the page and begin a new chapter.

Here’s a guide to help you navigate the path to healing and embrace the possibility of a fresh start:

Acknowledge and Validate Your Emotions: The first step towards healing is acknowledging and validating the many emotions that come from being diagnosed and then treated for cancer.  Difficult experiences often trigger a whirlwind of feelings: sadness, anger, fear, and confusion.  These emotions are normal and valid responses to challenging situations.  Suppressing or denying them can prolong the healing process and hinder your ability to move forward.

Allow yourself to feel the full range of your emotions, without judgment or self-criticism.  Recognize that it’s okay to feel sad, angry, or scared. Some people who get through cancer feel survivor’s guilt, knowing they made it through something other people do not. These emotions are indicators that you’re human and that you’ve been through something difficult.

Seek Support: Healing is not a solitary endeavor.  Reaching out to others, sharing your experiences, and seeking support can make a significant difference in your journey.  Connect with trusted friends, family members, or a therapist who can offer a listening ear, empathy, and guidance.

Support groups can also be invaluable resources.  Connecting with others who have shared similar experiences can provide a sense of community, understanding, and validation.  Knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles can be incredibly empowering.

Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself during this challenging time.  Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you would offer a dear friend going through a similar experience.  Avoid self-blame or harsh self-criticism.  Recognize that you’re doing the best you can with the resources you have.

Self-compassion involves acknowledging your pain, accepting your imperfections, and forgiving yourself for any perceived mistakes.  It’s about recognizing that you’re human and that you’re worthy of love and kindness, even in the midst of adversity.

Learn from the Past: While it’s important to acknowledge and process your emotions, it’s equally crucial to avoid dwelling on the past.  Ruminating on what happened, replaying events in your mind, or engaging in “what if” scenarios can keep you stuck in a cycle of pain and prevent you from moving forward.

Instead, try to reframe your experiences as opportunities for growth and learning.  Ask yourself what lessons you can take away from the situation.  How can you use this experience to become stronger, wiser, and more resilient?

Forgive Yourself and Others: Forgiveness is a powerful act of healing.  It’s about releasing resentment, anger, and bitterness towards yourself, or others involved in the situation.  Forgiveness doesn’t mean condoning hurtful behavior; it’s about freeing yourself from the burden of carrying those negative emotions.

Forgiving yourself is equally important. We often hold ourselves to unrealistic standards, blaming ourselves for things that are beyond our control.  Recognize that you’re human and that you’re allowed to make mistakes.  Forgive yourself for any perceived shortcomings and move forward with self-compassion.

Focus on the Present: One of the most effective ways to move forward is to shift your focus to the present moment.  Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga, can help you cultivate awareness of the present moment, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of calm.

Engage in activities that bring you joy and connect you with the present moment.  Spend time in nature, listen to music, read a book, or pursue a hobby.  Focusing on the present can help you appreciate the beauty and abundance in your life, even during challenges.

Create a Vision for the Future: While it’s important to learn from the past, it’s equally crucial to create a vision for the future.  What do you want your life to look like moving forward?  What are your goals, dreams, and aspirations?

Creating a vision for the future gives you something to strive for, a sense of purpose and direction.  It can help you shift your focus from the pain of the past to the possibilities of the future.

Take Small Steps: Embarking on a fresh start can feel overwhelming.  Instead of trying to make drastic changes all at once, focus on taking small, manageable steps.  Break down your goals into smaller, more achievable tasks.  Celebrate each accomplishment, no matter how small.

Small steps, taken consistently, can lead to significant progress over time.  Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Embrace Change: Change is an inevitable part of life.  Embracing change, rather than resisting it, can open up new possibilities and opportunities for growth.  Recognize that change can be challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.

Be open to new experiences, new relationships, and new ways of thinking.  Step outside your comfort zone and explore the unknown.  Embrace the adventure of life and allow yourself to be surprised by what you discover.

Practice Gratitude: Cultivating gratitude can be a powerful antidote to negativity and despair.  Focusing on the things you’re grateful for, even in the midst of challenges, can shift your perspective and promote a sense of well-being.

Take time each day to appreciate the good things in your life, no matter how small.  Express gratitude to the people who support you, the experiences that enrich your life, and the blessings that surround you.

Rediscover Yourself: Difficult experiences can often lead to a period of self-reflection and rediscovery.  Use this time to explore your values, passions, and interests.  What truly matters to you?  What brings you joy and fulfillment?

This is an opportunity to redefine yourself, to shed old beliefs and patterns that no longer serve you, and to embrace new possibilities.  It’s a chance to create a life that is authentic, meaningful, and aligned with your true self.

Celebrate Your Survivor Strength: Recognize and celebrate your strength and resilience.  You’ve been through a difficult experience, and you’ve come out on the other side.  You’re stronger than you think.

Acknowledge the courage it took to face your challenges, the perseverance you demonstrated in overcoming obstacles, and the wisdom you gained from your experiences.  Celebrate your strength and allow it to empower you as you move forward.

Turning the page and embracing a fresh start is a journey of healing, growth, and transformation.  It’s about acknowledging the past, learning from it, and finding the strength to move forward with hope and optimism.  It’s about embracing change, rediscovering yourself, and creating a future that is filled with joy, meaning, and purpose.
