Cancer Awareness Events

Connecting with the local community is a priority for the team at Comprehensive Cancer Centers. This outreach helps inform the general public about ways to reduce health risks and to encourage early screenings that can lead to better treatment outcomes, should cancer be diagnosed.

The oncology practice also appreciates the opportunities public events provide to have cancer patients and survivors share their stories and inspire others. The events also present the opportunity for family and friends of cancer patients and survivors to celebrate the incredible courage of their friends or loved ones publicly and proudly.

The many events that Comprehensive partners with includes the Coaches vs. Cancer college basketball and hockey tournaments, Vegas Golden Knights games, golf tournaments and many others. Recently, Comprehensive teamed up with the Las Vegas Aces WBNA team, as well as the Las Vegas Lights soccer team to spread awareness and honor survivors and patients.

Las Vegas Lights

In one recent partnership with the Las Vegas Lights, Comprehensive brought “Colleen the Colon” to a game, where fans walked through the large inflatable colon to help get better informed about colorectal cancer prevention, while heading into Cashman Field to watch the Lights play.

“Colleen the Colon” is an oversized inflatable measuring over twelve feet wide and twelve feet tall and simulates walking through a human colon.  The experience is meant to teach individuals about normal colon tissue, Crohn’s disease, polyps, malignant polyps, colon cancer and advanced colon cancer. Fans could see what potential problems look like from the inside of the colon, to get a better understanding of risks from diseases, but more importantly benefits from early detection through screenings. In other partnerships with the Lights, cancer survivors were able to do the ceremonial first kick to start the game, and even take a shot at goal to score on the team’s mascot, Cash the Soccer Rocker.

The next partnership with the Las Vegas Lights will be on October 16 for their breast cancer awareness game.

Las Vegas Aces

With WNBA season back in playoffs and finals, and with fans in the stands, Comprehensive Cancer Centers was proud to partner with the Las Vegas Aces, working with the team to celebrate another team that inspires: breast cancer patients, survivors and forever fighters.

An integral part of the partnership between Comprehensive Cancer Centers and the Las Vegas Aces is Every Point Counts. The practice committed to donate $20 to the American Cancer Society for every free throw made by the team this season during each home game. Comprehensive Cancer and the Aces highlighted the partnership, and the progress of the program, by teaming up for a Breast Cancer Awareness Night held in August. This title game featured breast cancer patients and physicians from Comprehensive Cancer Centers throughout the game.

At the Breast Cancer Awareness Night, Comprehensive made an announcement at the game and doubled that contribution for $20 to $40 per free throw. And, on top of that, one of Dr. Rupesh Parikh’s patients, Anne Freid and her wife, Barbara, graciously added $20 for each free throw on top of the Comprehensive amount.

The sum total of donations from 304 free throw the Aces made this regular season, along with an individual donation, resulted in close to $20,000 donated to the American Cancer Society. The donation helps the ACS fund local initiative for cancer awareness, prevention and research.

UNLV and Coaches vs Cancer

Comprehensive is continuing these community efforts with partnerships this fall including UNLV Football’s Breast Cancer Awareness Game at Allegiant Stadium and Coaches vs. Cancer basketball tournament at T-Mobile Arena. The first of which is the Roman Main Event, on November 19th and featuring the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, Michigan, Arizona, Wichita State. Then on November 26, Comprehensive Cancer will continue its outreach efforts, sponsoring the big time match up of Duke and Gonzaga basketball teams in the Continental Tire Challenge.

With Comprehensive’s many community partnerships, the practice seeks to find new and interesting ways to educate the community about annual screenings and the benefits of finding cancer at its earliest stage.

Comprehensive Cancer Centers is an award-winning multi-specialty practice comprising medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, breast surgery, pulmonary services, cancer genetic counseling and clinical research, with treatment centers and offices throughout Southern Nevada.
