The Role of Advanced Practice Providers at Comprehensive Cancer Centers
Advanced Practice Providers at Comprehensive Cancer Centers, like Geneelou Tobias Cruz, play a crucial role in the care and treatment of the practice’s patients. Responsibilities for team members typically includes the following:
Patient Assessment: Advanced practice providers at Comprehensive Cancer assess patients’ physical, emotional, and psychological needs before, during, and after cancer treatment. This involves conducting physical exams, reviewing medical histories, and monitoring symptoms.
Symptom Management: Oncology practice providers help patients manage cancer-related symptoms such as pain, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. They provide supportive care and offer interventions to alleviate discomfort and improve quality of life, as necessary.
Patient Education: Practice providers educate patients and their families about what to expect during their cancer journeys including treatment options, potential side effects, and self-care strategies. They empower patients to make informed decisions and adhere to treatment plans.
Emotional Support: Oncology practice providers provide emotional support and counseling to patients, and their families, throughout the cancer journey. They offer empathy, compassion, and guidance to help individuals cope with the emotional challenges of diagnosis and treatment.
Care Coordination: Practice providers collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including oncologists, surgeons, social workers, and nutritionists, to coordinate comprehensive care for patients. They ensure all aspects of treatment plans are integrated and tailored to meet individual care needs.
Survivorship Care: Oncology providers support patients transitioning from active treatment to survivorship. They assist in developing survivorship care plans, which include follow-up appointments, surveillance for recurrence, and strategies for maintaining personal health and wellness.
Research and Evidence-Based Practice: Oncology providers participate in clinical research studies and stay informed about advancements in cancer care. They integrate these evidence-based practices into their care to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
Advocacy: Providers advocate for patients’ rights, preferences, and access to quality cancer care. They serve as liaisons between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring that patients’ voices are heard and their needs are addressed.
