Comprehensive Cancer Centers and Shea Theodore team up for sixth year to provide funding to help Southern Nevadans through “Kay’s Power Play.”
In a landmark celebration during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Comprehensive Cancer Centers and Vegas Golden Knights star defenseman Shea Theodore announced an additional $50,000 commitment for “Kay’s Power Play,” a financial support fund named in honor of Shea’s late grandmother, to help Southern Nevadans. A press conference to make the announcement was held at a Comprehensive treatment center located at 10001 S. Eastern Avenue, Suite 108 in Henderson. This initiative promotes breast cancer awareness and encourages women to schedule regular mammogram screening.
“Kay’s Power Play,” named in honor of Shea’s late grandmother, Kay Darlington, who passed away from breast cancer, launched in 2020 to encourage and remind women to get regular mammograms and specifically to assist those who are uninsured, underinsured and patients under 40 years old whose mammograms are not covered by insurance. To date, more than $400,000 has been committed to “Kay’s Power Play,” including this year’s $50,000 contribution. The program also provides financial assistance and breast cancer support services for patients and survivors.
Since the launch of “Kay’s Power Play,” Susan G. Komen Nevada has been a trusted partner, providing life-saving services to hundreds of local breast cancer patients and offering support for breast cancer screening exams, including access to women under 40 as well as women who are uninsured and underinsured or out of work. This funding expanded help breast cancer patients access other resources, including help with rent, bills, groceries and other items. Today, an additional $40,000 was committed to Komen to continue their work.
Also announced at the event, the Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors received $10,000 in funding as part of “Kay’s Power Play” to serve their mission of providing mental and social support to Southern Nevada breast cancer patients and survivors, along with providing supplies including mastectomy kits, wigs, surgical bras and other items at no cost.
Nevada State Senator Julie Pazina, also a breast cancer survivor, joined the event and shared her personal breast cancer journey, discussed recent conversations with local breast cancer patients and advocates and highlighted the importance of community partnerships and nonprofits. Senator Pazina announced an additional grant of $4,000 from We Work for Health to support Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors.
“Six years ago began a powerhouse partnership between Comprehensive Cancer Centers and Shea Theodore and we’re so happy to continue working with him to fund “Kay’s Power Play,” and this year expand its reach and services,” said Lisa Santwer, executive director of Comprehensive Cancer Centers. “This commitment to Susan G. Komen Nevada and the Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors allows us to translate personal commitment into action, removing financial barriers for those underinsured or facing overwhelming living expenses and extending support to patients and survivors far beyond the walls of our treatment centers.”
“Marking the sixth year of Kay’s Power Play is an incredible tribute to my grandmother’s legacy,” said Shea Theodore, Vegas Golden Knights defenseman. “This fund provides real, tangible help and ensures thousands of Southern Nevadans can access support needed to fight this disease.”
Following the press conference, Theodore met and took photos with patients and staff at the treatment center.
Additionally, to further raise awareness about the importance of breast cancer screenings, Comprehensive wrapped two cars in pink and adorned them with breast cancer awareness messaging. The cars were out on the streets of Las Vegas for 30 days through Nov. 9.
