Support Cancer Survivors: June 2
According to the National Cancer Institute, as of January 2019, there are 16.9 million cancer survivors in the United States. We all know someone who has been touched by cancer. Because of this, Comprehensive Cancer Centers is proud to support National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 2, 2019. Now in its 32nd year, National Cancer Survivors Day is a worldwide celebration of all survivors to recognize them as an inspiration for those who recently completed treatment, those going through treatment as well as those who are just facing a diagnosis.
According to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, a survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.
National Cancer Survivors Day gives cancer survivors an opportunity to share their stories, connect with other survivors, celebrate personal milestones, and recognize those who have supported them. It also gives communities a chance to stand alongside these survivors and raise awareness about the disease and call attention to the challenges of cancer survivorship, but also highlights resources and the advances being made in treatment and research. The ultimate goal is to improve cancer survivor’s quality of life.
The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation offers free guidance, education, networking resources and assistance to hundreds of hospitals, support groups and other cancer-related organizations that host official National Cancer Survivors Day events in their communities.
As the number of cancer survivors continues to grow in Southern Nevada, it is becoming even more important to address the unique needs of this population. In addition to facing a serious illness, cancer survivors must contend with drug costs, inadequate insurance coverage, difficulty finding and keeping employment, and ongoing physical, psychological, and financial struggles that persist even after treatment ends.
#CelebrateLife for National Cancer Survivors Day
Leading up to National Cancer Survivors Day, Comprehensive Cancer Centers urges everyone to spread the message that life after cancer is something worth celebrating, and a better quality of life for cancer survivors is worth fighting for. The day is an excellent time to let a survivor know you’re thinking of them by sending a text, email or calling them.
